Implementation of LED lighting – Bemowo airport

Objective

Bemowo airport is known not only to fans of aviation, because this centre was the place of many cultural events. Over the past few years, world-class concerts have been held at the Warsaw airport, often gathering tens of thousands of fans. It is enough to mention the performances of such artists as: Metallica, AC/DC or Michael Jackson. The facility needed the appropriate quality lighting – very strong, efficient and energy-saving at the same time. Our company was selected from among a number of other offers.

The investor was looking for light sources to illuminate the hangar, the square in front of the hangar, the parking lot and the access road to the airport. The products from the industrial lighting segment of our company were used. The main idea when choosing strong and economical lighting was to get the best performance and the best ratio between power, price and the savings gained. There are no better products than the light sources based on LED technology to achieve such compromise. In the case of the airport, we have used street lamps that proved its efficiency in many municipalities in Poland – GREENIE LED Bridgelux 50W street lamps, cold colour temperature of 5500-6500K. They were mounted on the lampposts near the access road to the airport and at the parking lot.

Execution

The application of cold light was a good solution. Thanks to this, it was possible to obtain the aforementioned compromise between the amount of light (the cold colour has the largest number of lumens from all other colours) and energy consumption. The current cold white light generated improved visibility and recognition of objects after dark, especially in relation to the previously used sodium lamps that emitted yellow light. In addition, in all illuminated places, much higher light intensity was obtained, compared to the previously used lamps.

In addition, at the airport and for the lighting of hangars, various Greenie floodlights were used, both from the Professional, and Economy series. We used Economy models with the following wattage: 140W, 100W, 70W and Professional models with the following wattage: 50W and 30W. Floodlights, thanks to the universal mounting bracket, can be simply and quickly mounted to many surfaces. Thanks to this functionality, they were easily used in airport hangars.

The wattage was matched to the mounting height and to the desired luminous flux. The strongest floodlights were installed at airport control tower, and in this case two light colours were used, exceptionally – warm and natural.

The final result

Greenie LED Bridgelux 50W street lamps replaced sodium lamps with a power of 250W, so in the case of illumination of the access road and the car park, energy consumption decreased fivefold. Similar results were obtained in the case of floodlights that replaced the old type metal halide lamps that are characterized by high failure frequency. The road and the parking lot were perfectly illuminated, as shown in the pictures from the implementation. The use of high wattage floodlights allowed achieving optimal lighting of the area in front of the hangar and the interior of the hangar.

Of course, all LED sources are characterized by extended life, which is extremely important in the case of institutions focused on continuous work – such as the airport. The high quality and long life of Greenie LED lamps ensure reduced maintenance expenses, which is especially important when the lamps are mounted high in hard-to-reach places.

Thanks to the replacement of lighting with LEDs, the airport area was very well illuminated, and the electricity charges have decreased several times. Usually, thanks to LED lighting, one can expect the savings of more than 50%, which has certainly been achieved in this project. The funds that Bemowo Airport is going to save on lighting its facilities can be used for other purposes.
