Realization of LED lighting in Management Faculty of University of Warsaw

Challenge

University of Warsaw is the largest and one of the best universities in Poland. It was founded in 1816 and has had a significant impact on the education of Polish society and promoting of Polish culture since the times of the partitions and occupation. Currently, University of Warsaw educates more than 50 thousands of students and employs more than 3 thousands academics. For years, the University has been trusted by students and employers and has been winning top places in the rankings of the best universities in the country.

This time, our task was to  select of products that will illuminate the interior of the university, as well as the outdoor zone at the Management Faculty, which is located at the Szturmowa street in Warsaw. Education institutions require reliable lighting since they are often opened seven days a week, and perform multimode education tasks. The illumination intensity of desks must be at least at the level of 500 lux,  therefore lighting must not only be reliable but also efficient.

Implementation

In order to complete the installation, we have used products listed in the following sections. The lecture halls were provided with T8 60cm LED Greenie Professional  tubes (covered by up to 5 years warranty), together  with square raster coverings of  60x60cm dimension. The corridors of Faculty were illuminated by LED Greenie PLC G24 with a power of 9 and 7W. While the outer part was illuminated by Greenie LED AluCorn with power of 20W and 33W

Greenie LED bulbs of AluCorn series are products with a very wide range of applications – they can be used in warehouses, production halls or –  just like in the case of the University of Warsaw – in street or park lighting. Greenie LED T8 linear tubes are dedicated for ceiling installation, and are usually used as a replacement of the existing fluorescent tubes, often with the use of existing fixtures. Greenie LED T8 lamps  are therefore also very popular in the lighting of office space. In contrast, the Greenie PLC LED lamps are mounted in special housings with a reflector called “buckets.”

The final result

Both external and internal light sources has been selected in the color of neutral white light (4000-4500K). It is empirically confirmed fact that this color of white is best to use in workplaces, as it’s reception affects people in a most preferable way, i.e. by stimulating to work. According to a studies conducted by the American institutes, the use of natural light color (4000K) as a replacement of the existing warm fluorescent tubes, raises the students grades by about 17%. In a place like university educating potential future Polish intellectual elite, this fact is of particular importance.

The neutral color of light (4000K) is also a shade that is closest to daylight. As a result the illuminated park looks more natural and is well-lighted. Greenie LED Alucorn bulbs with a power 33W completely replaced the existing sodium lamps. The visual effect is striking – after changing sodium lamps, the outside areas obtained their nice, natural color without the orange ‘distortion.

In addition to light quality additional benefits are savings resulting from the efficiency of LED sources, and thus more than 70% lower electricity bills. Additional savings are generated on the lack of need to perform any replacements or any other maintenance activities related to lighting. These are key factors for any large institutions like the University of Warsaw, but also for the smaller ones.
